Dear Colleague
We thought that you might be interested in an approach to reviewing the
research literature on staff and educational development, that will also
facilitate sharing such reviews in our community.
In principle, we are all convinced that we need to access the evidence
base to support our work. The challenge, however, is to do this in a
practical fashion - our time and energy is limited. In order to make it
more straightforward to search the literature, we have developed a
protocol. This draws on lessons from evidence based medicine and from
systematic reviews of research. The protocol was well received at the
November SEDA conference - it genuinely seems to have met a need.
Notes explaining our approach, including the protocol itself, can be
found on the SEDA website, alongside the details for Session 45 - (you
may need to refresh your browser):

If you do go ahead and use this approach, then do consider letting us
have a copy of the results. We would like to develop the protocol on the
basis of an analysis of its use in practice; and this may lead on to
further uses of the approach to map the reseach base on staff and
educational development. It also doesn't matter if you replicate the use
of the approach on a topic someone elseexamined as it will widen the
scope of the research accessed and show us whether the protocol is
sufficiently flexible or adaptable enough.
Best wishes
