Developing University English Teaching:The DUET project
DUET workshop for new university teachers of English and
related subjects: towards accreditation
Stephenson Hall, University of Sheffield, July 8-10, 1999
Who is this DUET workshop for?
For newcomers to the profession - typically probationers
currently in post or about to take up a post - in other
words, for the teachers, researchers, leaders of the
subject for the next thirty years and more. Also for those
who are currently their mentors and supervisors, typically
more senior staff, who are required to deal, after Dearing
and just before the new Institute for Learning and
Teaching, with issues of probation and accreditation as
they relate to the subject English and to the institution.
What is the purpose of this DUET workshop?
Workshop members will develop and practise skills,
expertise and understanding as in any developmental
workshop. But the DUET methodology means that critical
reflection is central. This is not about learning how the
experts do it, but reflecting on what teaching and learning
to teach English in Higher Education means now, and will
mean in the future. It is action learning. Accreditation
for university teaching is going to be a requirement. But
the nature of the training and devel-opment programme that
should lead to accreditation is by no means obvious. One
thing which seems agreed, however, is that it needs to be
subject-specific - because teaching English is very
different from teaching Physics or even History. An aim of
this workshop is to work collaboratively with the people
most concerned, in order to pilot a workshop which could
constitute an effective English-specific core for any
accreditation process.
What is DUET?
For twenty years DUET has been running a unique kind of
workshop designed to develop the subject English. Workshops
are intensely participative, collaborative and reflective.
They involve the practice of writing, textual study,
teaching and reflection, specifically reflection on the
nature of the discipline. Recently the project has received
funding from the Higher Education Funding Council (FDTL).
