DUET workshop for new university teachers of English and
related subjects: towards accreditation

Stephenson Hall, University of Sheffield, July 8-10, 1999

Who is this DUET workshop for?
· For newcomers to the profession - typically probationers
currently in post or about to take up a post - in other
words, for the teachers, researchers, leaders of the
subject for the next thirty years and more. · Also for
those who are currently their mentors and supervisors,
typically more senior staff, who are required to deal,
after Dearing and just before the new Institute for
Learning and Teaching, with issues of probation and
accreditation as they relate to the subject English and to
the institution.

What is the purpose of this DUET workshop?
· Workshop members will develop and practise skills,
expertise and understanding as in any developmental
workshop. But the DUET methodology means that critical
reflection is central. This is not about learning how the
experts do it, but reflecting on what teaching and learning
to teach English in Higher Education means now, and will
mean in the future. It is action learning. · Accreditation
for university teaching is going to be a requirement. But
the nature of the training and devel-opment programme that
should lead to accreditation is by no means obvious. One
thing which seems agreed, however, is that it needs to be
subject-specific - because teaching English is very
different from teaching Physics or even History. An aim of
this workshop is to work collaboratively with the people
most concerned, in order to pilot a workshop which could
constitute an effective English-specific core for any
accreditation process.

What is DUET?
· For twenty years DUET has been running a unique kind of
workshop designed to develop the subject English. Workshops
are intensely participative, collaborative and reflective.
They involve the practice of writing, textual study,
teaching and reflection, specifically reflection on the
nature of the discipline. Recently the project has received
funding from the Higher Education Funding Council (FDTL).

The Staff

The workshop will be designed and run by an experienced
DUET team:

at the University of Warwick and pro-vice-chancellor of the
University. Author of numerous books, including Translation

through literature; Feminist experiences: The Women’s
movement in Four Cultures; Sylvia Plath; Studying British
Cultures: An introduction (ed.). · Colin Evans (Convenor)
Academic Staff Development Adviser, Birkbeck College,
London, author of Language People, Open University Press,
1988; English People, Open University Press, 1992. · Sue

West of England, co-author of ten books in the “53” series,
Interesting Ways to Teach. · Ben Knights, Professor and
Head of English and Cultural Studies at the University of
Teesside, author of From Reader to Reader: Theory, Text and
Practice in the Study Group; The Listening Reader: Fiction
and Poetry for Counsellors and Psychotherapists; and
(forthcoming) Writing Masculinities: Male Narratives in
Twentieth Century Fiction. · Evelyn Toseland is the project
administrator: Faculty of Humanities, University of the
West of England. 0117 9656261 X 4343; or email
[log in to unmask] The cost of the workshop is
£160 including en-suite accommodation and all meals. The
workshop starts at 2.00 on July 8th and finishes with lunch
on July 10. Some bursaries are available for probationers
unable to get funding from their institution. Workshop
