APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTINGS
Dear colleague
What is the conceptual basis of our practice as educational
developers?
At the SEDA conference at Stoke Rochford in March 1999 delegates
started to articulate the conceptual underpinnings of their practice as
educational developers - formal explanations for why they do what they do
in the way that they do. Afterwards SEDA established a www site as a
way of collating these conceptions and sharing them as a basis for debate
amongst us. It seems, for example, that educational development in
Germany has a more philosophical basis than in the UK, while practice in
the USA is often more empirically based. In the UK the conceptual
underpinnings are quite varied, sometimes based on the disciplinary
background of the developer concerned. I'm hoping that we will be able to
widen the breadth of our conceptions, tune up our existing conceptions,
find literature that has been useful to others, and provide help to new
developers who are searching for a rationale for their action. We may even
prompt new integration of conceptions to help us to build a more coherent
underpinning for our profession.
Please contribute to this debate by visiting
http://www.seda.demon.co.uk/spring99/edrnform.html
and using the simple forms there to submit your own conceptions. These
will then be mounted on the www site by staff in the SEDA office. The
more conceptions we get together, the richer the debate will be.
Thanks, in anticipation,
Graham Gibbs
