Research Methods in Art, Design and Media Education
5 half-day sessions
This short course aims to:
· Enable you to have a basic knowledge of what is involved in undertaking educational research
· Provide you with opportunities to practice various research methods
· Develop a critical understanding of how research can interact with theories within education and your own discipline
By the end of this course you will be able to:
· Formulate realistic and appropriate research questions
· Identify and describe a range of methods for sampling, collecting and analysing data
· Select an appropriate method for a particular research question or hypothesis
· Demonstrate an awareness of research ethics
· Analyse and evaluate research reports
· Describe how theories of art, design and media education can interact with research
· Be able to explain how research can inform policy and practice in your art, design or media discipline
Indicative Content
Formulating questions or hypotheses; using theory to inform research; using research to test theories; approaches to research (research paradigms); research ethics; sampling methods, data collection; analysing data; reporting research.
Learning and Teaching Methods
Workshops, Individual Presentations and Whole Class Discussion, Distance Learning and Self-Study and Reflective Journal.
