LIFELONG LEARNING... IN THE FARCE LANE
24 October 2000 6.00pm

As part of the Festival of Lifelong Learning the University of East
London is hosting a Public Lecture to be given by Lord Rix CBE DL,
Chancellor of the University on 24 October at 6.00pm.

During the lecture Lord Rix will provide an entertaining outline of
the history of theatrical farce and reveal how his understanding of
audiences, timing and business developed out of many years as
actor/manager, Brian Rix.

Brian Rix became a professional actor at the age of 18, and after
serving in the RAF during the Second World War formed his own
theatre company. From 1950 until 1980 he became increasingly
celebrated for productions on the stage and television. After he retired
as an actor-manager, Lord Rix became a trustee of the Theatre of
Comedy Company and served on the Arts Council as Chairman of
the Drama Panel and of the Monitoring Committee on Arts and
Disabled People.

Lord Rix was Secretary General of the Royal Society for Mentally
Handicapped Children and Adults (Mencap) from 1980-87 and in
1988 became its Chairman. From January 1988 until July 1997 he
served as a Vice-Lord Lieutenant of Greater London.

Lord Rix was appointed the CBE in 1977, knighted in 1986, became
a Life Baron in 1992 and has been awarded seven Honorary
University Degrees.

Lord Rix was installed as the first Chancellor of the University of
East London on 16 July 1997 and was recently at UEL, together with
the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, for the official opening of the
Docklands Campus.

The lecture will be held at UEL'S new and exciting Docklands
Campus that has easy access by DLR to Cyprus station or busses
101, 300 or 474.

This is part of a series of public lectures at UEL the next being on
24 January 2001 by Alan Tuckett, Director of the National Institute
for Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE) who will be talking
about conviviality and lifelong learning.
