Increasing advances in Information Technology and ease of student travel
and communication have resulted in a greater potential for academic
plagiarism to be used and, arguably, to remain undetected. Problems
exist in identifying acceptable definitions of plagiarism and in the
academic community agreeing fair and substantive penalties for those
found to have plagiarised another's work. The Quality Assurance Agency
in their Code of Practice on Assessment state that all Universities will
be expected to have guidelines in place on dealing with plagiarism.
This one day national conference, organised by the University of
Northumbria at Newcastle, will offer opportunities to explore the
issues. Activities will include keynote lectures and workshops where
information and views from various sources will be shared. There may be
no easy answers to the emerging problems of plagiarism, but it is hoped
that open discussion and exchange of ideas and experience could lead not
only to clarification of policies in individual institutions, but
ultimately to the acceptance of nationally and internationally agreed
guidelines.
The conference will be of relevance to all academics and senior
university and college administrators with responsibility for advising
on academic irregularities.
Workshops will include:
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism and the Internet
Contradictions in the plagiarism debate? group work, study skills
centres and project supervision
Penalties for plagiarism -punishments to fit the crime?
How to design assessments that decrease opportunities for plagiarism
Plagiarism - is the university judicial system too laborious?
