WRITING DEVELOPMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION: CHANGING CONTEXTS FOR TEACHING AND
LEARNING
Higher Education is in an unprecedented state of flux. For the first time,
institutions have been asked to articulate their strategies for teaching and
learning, placing pedagogy at the centre of the national agenda. The
emerging 'professionalisation' of teaching practice across the sector, and
the attention given to discipline-specific pedagogies through the new
subject centre networks has created a broad platform for the consideration
and development of teaching and learning. The influence of government and
industry is pivotal in driving the new skills agenda, nudging higher
education to an ever more vocationally/market oriented provision. The
'learning society' and the 'knowledge economy' are new phenomena with which
the sector must grapple, affecting course design and delivery, inspiring new
multi-disciplinary degree programmes and stimulating cross-disciplinary
research.
These changing contexts raise many questions for the development of
students' writing skills, prompting consideration of the new roles and
functions of writing development in higher education.
· How are institutional models for the strategic development of
students' writing skills resourced, delivered and evaluated?
· How credible is the skills model as a framework for writing
development in tertiary education?
· How can research further our understanding of the place that writing
occupies in (lifelong) learning?
· Does the increasing application of technology in the (virtual)
classroom help or hinder the development of writing?
· How can writing developers respond to the needs of an increasingly
diverse student population?
THE CONFERENCE
The 8th annual Writing Development in Higher Education conference will
explore the locations, practices and theories of writing development in
these changing contexts. The conference will be structured to provide
delegates with coherent opportunities for learning and networking, bringing
participants together in a range of discursive activities including keynote
presentations, conference papers, practical workshops and platform debates.
To enhance opportunities for networking and the sharing of innovative
approaches, all delegates will be given an opportunity to share their work
in a poster display area.

ABOUT WDHE
The Writing Development in Higher Education initiative was launched in
September 1994 by the University of Northumbria in response to widely
expressed concerns about the standards of students' written communication
skills. Conferences held at Middlesex, Luton, UW Aberystwyth, Reading and
Liverpool, along with an active discussion network have brought together
practitioners from a wide range of countries, institutions and interest
areas to discuss the forms that writing development can take within Higher
Education.
CONFERENCE THEMES
Conference contributions are invited in the following themes (although other
areas will be considered):
- Inspiring, managing and evaluating change
learning lessons from other sectors and countries / evaluating the
transferability of such models across national and institutional boarders /
models for managing change effectively in an institutional setting /
approaches to evaluating the effectiveness of writing development strategy
and/or practice
- Institutional strategies
strategic initiatives for writing development / the resourcing, delivery and
evaluation of institutional approaches / the impact of Learning & Teaching
Strategies on traditional models of writing development / developing staff
- as writers and/or as teachers of writing
- The skills agenda
analysis of the key skills model / developing writing for lifelong learning
/ the relationship between writing and other skills - e.g. oracy, problem
solving, team working / diagnosing proficiency in writing / debating
standards in writing / facilitating writing for diverse audiences
- Curriculum development
case studies in educational (re)design / developing writing within (and
across) the disciplines / ensuring progression throughout the degree / using
assessment to develop writing / curriculum design for student diversity /
giving feedback for learning
- The changing face of writing in HE
the evolving genres of writing in higher education / exploring writing
traditions - e.g. the role of the essay / designing written assignments for
the 'real world'
- Communication and information technology
models for using C&IT in the development of students' writing / the
strengths (and weaknesses) of using C&IT in writing development / predicting
the future of writing development
- The diversity challenge
evaluating the impact of student diversity / responses to flexible, distance
and open learning / designing induction and other support initiatives /
practical and strategic approaches to supporting disability / responding to
the individual in a large group setting
- Putting research/theory into practice
using theories of both pedagogy and language to underpin writing development
/ the relevance of the research of writing to the teaching of writing / the
value of genre and academic literacy as theories of writing development /
learning about the way we write to enhance the way we learn
CONFERENCE DETAILS
The Conference will be held at the University of Leicester's Stamford Hall
with meals and en suite accommodation provided in the neighbouring Beaumont
Hall. A short drive from the city centre and main University campus, the
conference accommodation overlooks the University's Harold Martin Botanical
Gardens, offering a very pleasant conference experience in beautiful
surroundings.
The conference will open with registration from 11.00am on Tuesday 24th
April 2001 and will close at 4.00 the following day. Full Delegates will be
provided with en suite accommodation for one night and will be invited to a
wine reception prior to the main Conference Dinner. An optional Day Delegate
rate is available for those not requiring overnight accommodation.
Accommodation for delegates with disabilities is available.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Contributions are invited that address the conference themes (although
papers that fall out of these areas will also be considered). Sessions will
normally last 40 minutes and it is expected that session leaders will allow
equal weighting for presentation and discussion. Proposals for double
sessions will be considered. Open exhibition space will be provided for
delegates wishing to display poster presentations, resources and other
materials. The poster space is an ideal area for sharing ideas and 'work in
progress' that might not yet be at a stage for inclusion in a formal
conference paper. Abstracts for all proposals should be no longer than 200
words and should contain the following information:
Conference Paper:
· the type of paper (e.g. for discussion, report)
· the conference theme to be addressed
· an outline of context (if reporting work in process)
· the issues to be raised
· the relationship with relevant research/literature
· the likely recommendations or conclusions
Workshop:
· the conference theme to be addressed
· the issues/approaches/skills to be explored
· the proposed learning outcomes
· the relationship with relevant research/literature
· the workshop methods to be used (e.g. brainstorming, group
activities, role play).
Poster Presentations:
· the poster title
· an outline of the context
· summary of poster content
· intended outcome if any (e.g. setting up a network)
Submitting a conference proposal
All proposals should be submitted with the accompanying Proposal Form and
sent to the Teaching & Learning Unit at the University of Leicester along
with your Conference Registration Form. Please supply electronic copies of
your abstract(s) in Microsoft Word or rich text format.
The deadline for the submission of proposals is: Friday 9th February
All contributors will be invited to submit their work for publication in the
Conference Proceedings. Please note that all submissions for the proceedings
will be reviewed by the Conference Committee and submission does not
guarantee publication.
