You are invited to join our new ALNTalk discussion:
"Can ALN Improve Face-to-Face Teaching?"
This free, moderated discussion begins January 11, 1999.
ALN stands for Asynchronous (anytime/any place)
Learning Networks.
You can join the discussion by accessing

If you are already participating in ALNTalk, you will need

the list of forums you can view.
Here is a message from the Forum Moderator, Deb O'Bannon:
"I am an engineering professor who has embarked on the ALN
journey, after doing some real-time video instruction at a
distance, and, of course, regular face-to-face (F2F)
teaching. I attended some seminars at my university on
progressive teaching methodologies, but never really
figured out how to integrate team learning or the Socratic
method in my classes.
Distance ALN was the catalyst for me to integrate newer
pedagogies in my teaching than The Lecture. Distance ALN
was so different from F2F classroom work that it really
made me think about the best way to accomplish educational
objectives. Once I made the quantum leap to ALN, the chasm
between The Lecture and collaborative learning shrank.
I am now using more interesting teaching methods in my F2F
classes -- both core undergraduate and upper level graduate.
What is your experience? Can ALN Improve Face-to-Face
Teaching?"
ALNTalk is a free conference on Asynchronous Learning
Networks. An expert in the field moderates each forum
for two weeks. Previous forums remain active, but
are not moderated.
If you want to develop your own ALN course, we will be
offering the online workshop, "Getting Started with
Online Courses." The next session is January 25-
March 15, 1999. Workshop registration is online at:
http://www.aln.org/gs_jan99/
During the last six months, we have added materials to
the workshop and now provide it in three modules: Basics,
Advanced FrontPage and Advanced Media. You may take any
module or purchase the package of three. Detailed
information about the workshop can be found at the
above URL.

ALNTalk is part of the ALN Web, which provides a free online
journal, magazine, review of work in ALN, pointers to workshops
and conferences, and related resources. You can find this and
other information on the ALN Web at

We express appreciation to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation,
