The University Teaching Certificate program offered through the University of Windsor's (ON, Canada) Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has won accreditation from the UK-based Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA), an international leader in professional development programs for university faculty. It is the first and only SEDA-recognized graduate certificate program in North America.
"The University of Windsor is to be congratulated on its vision and initiative in adopting the de facto international standard for teacher development programs," says Stephen Bostock, chair of the association's Professional Development Framework Committee. "SEDA hopes that this will be a stimulus for other Canadian universities to use or adapt SEDA accreditation so that professional development programs for teachers increase in status, to support the continuous improvements in teaching and learning that we all work for in higher education."
With SEDA recognition, the University of Windsor program joins an international educational development network that provides advice and assistance for continuous enrichment of the program. Involvement in this network opens up opportunities for international exchange and collaboration on strategies to enhance teaching and to improve the educational experience of the student. The program is offered to faculty and graduate students with the aim of helping academics realize their potential as scholarly teachers of their disciplines and educational leaders in their academic communities. The three-certificate modular program involves graduate-level coursework for credit; a selection of non-credit half courses based on participants’ interests; and practica, independent project work, and extensive mentoring. The first certificate in the program, Fundamentals of University Teaching, was piloted this year with a small group of participants.
