Research in Teaching and Learning: Getting Started
Date: Wednesday 24th March 2004
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Venue Royal Institute of British Architects, London
WORKSHOP AIMS
As academics we deliver lectures, tutorials, seminars and supervise
laboratories and workshops. We supervise research students and
carry out research. We are committed to our subject specialities and
are encouraged when our students share our enthusiasm. However,
many of us would admit to times when we find the progress of our
students frustrating and wonder what we can do to help them achieve
success. We may also be concerned with declining numbers and our
ability to retain students on our courses.
How do we find out ways by which learning can be made more
effective? How can we find out how to attract and support our
students?
Research into teaching and learning provides the means to finding out
more about how learning takes place so that we can direct our efforts
into approaches which are most likely to be successful. Many of us
are developing new resources and innovative approaches and using
them without any real understanding of whether they are more or less
effective than traditional approaches. Research into teaching and
learning can provide that information.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with an
overview of the scope of pedagogical research in the science related
disciplines. We will explore how to pose research questions and the
place of theories. The different methodologies available and research
design will be explored, as well as making your findings known and
publication. There will be an opportunity to explore the possibilities
for collaborative research with other workshop participants.
