Effective curriculum planning in art, design and communication
18th March 2003
Book via the web at http://www.cltad.ac.uk or email [log in to unmask]
Venue: London W1, cost 150
"There's no need to plan - this module's been running like this since
before I started teaching here".
"Learning outcomes? But they aren't what I want to teach"
"I haven't read the module descriptor, but one of the second years
told me what they did last year".
"I'm not assessing the learning, how would I know? Can't I just give
a mark based on how nice the final piece is?"
"The module changed? When?"
"This is an art course. Nobody expects us to plan anything."
Real statements from real lecturers, believe it or not!
How do you make sure that what students learn is what a module says
they will learn?
How do you structure delivery of teaching and learning activities to
make sure that students are able to achieve what is expected?
And how do you set up assessment so that students are fairly assessed
without you having to look at everything they have done?
How do you cope with the different levels of experience that students
bring with them?
How do you work around competing pressures on space?
How do you analyse a module to ensure that necessary changes are put
in place for the next time?
If you've ever asked these questions, this session is for you. If
you've never asked these questions, or think they are not important,
this is definitely for you!
By the end of this session you should be able to
*Analyse the learning outcomes of a unit of study
*Plan teaching, learning and assessment strategies to ensure each
outcome is met
* Draft key session plans
* Develop an assessment strategy
* Make allowances for issues related to widening participation
* Plan the development and booking of resources
* Integrate theoretical elements to produce an holistic curriculum
* Identify opportunities for development of key skills
* Amend modules for future presentation
The session will be ideal for programme managers, module leaders and
admin staff with a responsibility for academic and quality assurance.
It would be particularly helpful to those about to undergo external
assessment, for example by the QAA or Edexcel. However, it will
benefit anybody involved in planning and/or delivering courses
(modular or otherwise).
Attendees should, if possible, bring examples of a programme handbook
or a specific module/unit they would like to begin planning.
Who will deliver the session?
Jonathan Baldwin is an Academic Developer with the ADC-LTSN based at
the University of Brighton. He has experience of teaching and leading
FE and HE programmes in art and design and is a member of the
Institute of Learning and Teaching and the Society for Research in
Higher Education.
