Synopsis:
Platošs much quoted, but mistranslated, aphorism the unexamined life is not
worth livingš takes a new turn in the new era of lifelong learning. When
learning implies assessment, the prospect of a life of assessment can take
the gloss off the more attractive notion of a life of learning.
The lecture starts from the premise that the bad experiences of assessment
common to most of the population provide a major barrier to promoting the
idea of lifelong learning. It addresses the question: what would assessment
in educational institutions need to look like if it seriously took account
of the need to prepare learners for continuing learning throughout their
lives? It will argue that some of the most basic ideas about assessment will
have to be radically rethought if lifelong learning is to be successfully
pursued and suggest some directions in which debates about assessment.
