Learning Technology Support Officer

A learning technologist is required to join a small, dedicated team
supporting collaborative learning amongst students, using Lotus Domino as
its virtual learning environment. A good understanding of and
commitment to learning at undergraduate and post-graduate levels is
required, together with excellent interpersonal skills for working with staff
and students and familiarity with using computers in a networked
environment. Experience in using Lotus Domino and web site development
is desirable but training will be provided.

The post

This new post has been created following a revision of the institutional
Learning Technology Strategy (LTS).  The LTS focuses particularly on
collaborative learning technologies: the university currently uses Lotus Domino
to provide the centrally support Virtual Learning Environment as well as
bespoke learning environments designed to specific academic/pedagogical
requirements.  Video-conferencing is also used.  

This post will be within the Learning Technology Development Group in the
Higher Education Development Centre within ISS.  The work of the group involves
advising and supporting academic staff in the implementation of
technologically-oriented teaching, learning and assessment.  An important
element of this work is developmental in order to move the work of the Group,
and of the University, forward in this area.  This post will focus on the
administration and monitoring of the central server that supports this service
together with staff and student training in this area.  After some training the
person will also be encouraged to take on some development work.  

The person appointed will be a graduate with an interest and experience in the
support of learning technologies.  The person will have an understanding of
learning and teaching in higher education and the interpersonal skills required
for working constructively with both staff and students; they will have good IT
skills which will include familiarity with using computers in a networked
environment, with Windows NT/2000 and with using the world wide web.  Training
will be provided in Lotus Domino.

Major responsibilities

(i)     Be responsible for the administrative monitoring and maintenance of
learning technology systems
(ii)    Develop web-based systems to support learning and teaching within the
context of existing learning technology developments
(iii)   Contribute to training and support of teaching and support staff in
learning technology tools and systems 
(iv)    Contribute to training and support of students using learning
technology tools and systems
(v)     Act as the team member with particular responsibility for monitoring
statutory regulations affecting the area of learning technology, such as the
Disability Discrimination Act, liasing with those responsible for these areas
within the institution as appropriate
(vi)    Consult with staff on requirements and needs in respect of learning
technology tools and systems
(vii)   Any other duties as required by the Director of Information Systems
Services.
