Title: Strategies for developing assessment in departments
Participants:
Course Directors and Strategic Managers
Aims:
To consider the importance of assessment in the changing context of
Higher Education and the need to develop an assessment strategy
Process:
The workshop will involve presentations, case studies, reading, peer
tutoring and small group discussion
Outcomes :
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
describe changing international attitudes towards assessment practice
list the major changes in assessment methods used
explain the role assessment plays in influencing student learning
explain the importance of reliability and validity of assessment methods
judge the apppropriateness of different assessment methods
develop a coherent assessment strategy explicitly linked to Programme

Workshop leader:Chris Rust is Principal Lecturer and Senior
Development Officer in the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning
Development at Oxford Brookes University. He was Course Leader for
the University's initial training course for new teaching staff for
six years, and along with three colleagues he helps to provide both
staff and educational development support to the University's 15
academic Schools and 14 support Departments. He is an experienced
workshop facilitator, with an especial interest in issues of
assessment. He has researched and published on a range of issues
including: the experiences of new teachers in HE, the positive
effects of supplemental instruction, ways of diversifying assessment,
and the effectiveness of workshops as a method of staff development.
