CONFERENCE CONTENT
In addition to the usual sessions devoted to individual papers
and workshops presented by conference participants, the conference
will feature the following special sessions:
Professor Michael Hoey from the University of Liverpool
will give the keynote presentation on the topic of what current
research in linguistics has to offer the language development
practitioner.
The conference will also include two practitioners'
forums: one on institutional strategies for supporting students'
writing development; and one on approaches to the diagnosis of
students'writing problems. The former will involve presentations from
Sandy Gilkes of University College Northampton, Doreen du Boulay from
the University of Sussex and Gaynor Backhouse from Nottingham Trent
University, outlining their institutions' policy in relation to
supporting writing development, and discussing some of their
strategies. Conference participants are encouraged to bring examples
of policy statements and materials used with students from their own
institutions, which may be displayed during the conference.
The second forum will address the issue of how best to diagnose
students' problems in writing. It will draw on at least two very
different perspectives: current work in Key Skills development and
approaches used with non-native speakers of English entering British
higher education institutions. Again conference participants should
bring any materials they are willing to share which they currently use
for diagnostic purposes.
Alongside these, there will be one or more sessions run by Roy
Johnson on practical applications of IT in the development of writing
skills. Roy is the author of several books and computer-based
learning programs concerned with writing and study skills. He is the
director of Mantex, which issues a fortnightly email newsletter on
writing and design matters.
The Conference will be held at Dale Hall, part of the University of
Liverpool’s Carnatic Conference Park. Situated just 10 minutes from
Liverpool City Centre, Dale Hall offers an enjoyable conference
experience in a peaceful parkland setting.
