Apologies for cross-posting
We still have places for this network meeting. Whilst it has 'art and design'
in the title, the meeting also aims to look at the more generic issues coming
out of Allan and Barry's interests. As such, it should appeal to anyone from
different disciplines as well as staff and educational developers.

“What has research into learning, teaching and assessment in art and
design got to offer other subject disciplines?”
Tuesday 28 November 2000
Time: 2.00 – 4.15 (coffee from 1.30)
Place: Room 205, 65 Davies Street, London W1K 5DA
Two years ago the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA)
collaborated to form a joint Educational Development Research Network together
with the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE). Our next meeting is
planned for Tuesday 28 November 2000 and will be hosted by The Centre for
Learning and Teaching in Art and Design (cltad) at The London Institute.
The meeting will be led by:
Allan Davies, Director of cltad (the Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art
and Design, The London Institute, The Royal College of Art and Wimbledon School
of Art and Professor Barry Jackson, Centre for Learning Development, Middlesex
University
Most research into learning and teaching at HE level over the past 20 years has
focused on text-based disciplines. Similar research within practical subjects,
although modest in scale, has often taken the conceptual frameworks within
text-based research for granted.
Recent research in Music (Reid, A 1999) and Art and Design (Reid A, and Davies,
A, 2000) has revealed further dimensions of the learning situation,
particularly in relation to professional practice, which must be taken into
account when considering practice-based subjects. To what extent do these
recent findings impact on other subjects?
The aim of this session will be to :
identify the outcomes of research into learning and teaching in art and design
which can contribute to learning and teaching issues in other subjects
The cost of the meeting is #10, which will include afternoon drinks.
