Dealing with copyrights for materials-based learning
If you¹re producing learning materials, you may well want to draw on other people¹s work. But how to do so without infringing their rights? It explores the practicalities of rights clearance as a core part of the production process. This is your opportunity to discuss your own specific rights problems with experienced practitioners.
Date: 16 March 1999, 09.30 - 17.00
Venue: The Open University Training Centre, Cofferidge Close, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes
Who will benefit: Everyone engaged in the acquisition, creation, presentation and distribution of educational materials. It will be of particular interest to those responsible for or engaged in the production of materials incorporating materials taken from other sources. The course will range from issues surrounding photocopying and simple video recording through to the more complex rights issues cast by the new and emerging digital technologies.
Workshop aims: The workshop should help you explore and gain practical insights into the following issues:
1. Copyright: What does it protect? How can it be used without clearance?
2. Collective licensing: CLA and CLARCS licensing arrangements.
3. Rights‹how do rights differ from copyright?
4. Broadcast and audio visual clearances
5. Computer based systems
6. Multimedia: So what makes it so different?
Workshop leaders: Richard McCracken, Rights Manager at the Open University and Madeleine Gilbart, Deputy Rights Manager. Both have considerable experience in the clearance of rights in course production across the entire range of media.

Improving your learning materials
So you¹ve written some learning materials. Now you want to know how they shape up. How might they be improved? Why not bring them along to this workshop and find out?
Date: 17th March 1999, 09.30 - 17.00
Venue: The Open University Training Centre, Cofferidge Close, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes
Who will benefit: Writers and editors who want to get friendly and constructive comments about their learning materials and compare their approaches with those of colleagues in other organisations.

1. Clarify what teaching techniques you are looking for in open or distance learning materials.
2. Improve your ability to develop effective learning materials by sharing the experience of:
(a) commenting on other people¹s materials;
(b) considering other people¹s comments on those materials; and
(c) receiving comments on your own materials.
3. Decide how critical commenting might be developed as a stage of materials development in your own organisation.

Many media are available for use in open or distance learning.
After print, audio and video are probably the two most used
media. But which media might best meet your learners¹ needs?
And how might they best be combined?

3. Examine some criteria for choosing media.
4. Plan how you might use audio or video (along with other media) in your own teaching.
5. Make more effective use of whichever media you choose.
