Subject: SEEC Staff Development Workshop: The Accreditation of European and
International Awards
Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 12:23:39 -0000
SEEC Southern England Consortium for Credit Accumulation and Transfer
Staff Development Workshop
The Accreditation of European and International Awards
Wednesday 16th December, 9.45 to 13.30
Britannia Meeting Rooms (NATFHE)
Britannia Street
King's Cross, London.
The workshop
As student mobility increases, the issue of recognition of awards, units,
modules and credits gained in other countries becomes increasingly
significant. The workshop will provide an opportunity for those involved
in maintaining and developing international links to discuss different
approaches to the international calibration of learning and credit rating.
The workshop will be of interest to those in HE who have a responsibility
for, or who are actively involved in, student exchange programmes, in
particular staff dealing with the issues of the comparability and quality
assurance of transnational programmes and awards.
The workshop will be in two parts:
an update on policy issues, including the most recent developments in the
field of international recognition and credit transfer;
a discussion in which the presenters will act as expert witnesses
responding to questions sent in by delegates and those that arise from the
presentations.
Delegates are invited to identify issues, concerns, problems etc on the
booking form. These will be circulated to the presenters and delegates
before the event.
The Presenters
Stephen Adam
Stephen is Principal Lecturer at the University of Westminster. He has
university-wide responsibility for quality assurance as deputy to the
Provost in charge. His research is all in the field of international credit
transfer and academic and professional recognition.
He was involved in ECTS from the start of its pilot phase for the CNAA in
the role of an institutional co-ordinator. He was also co-ordinator for the
chapter of the 'Robinson Report' into international credit transfer. Since
then he has been involved in various projects for the European Commission,
UNESCO, Council of Europe, ECCTIS 2000 and The Open University. These have
included work on the international development of ECTS, the Diploma
Supplement, academic and professional recognition and international credit
transfer. He is about to start work on a new feasibility project for the
Commission on the extension of ECTS to life-long learning and credit
accumulation.
Carolyn Campbell
Since 1 July 1998, Carolyn has been the International Consultant in the
Institutional Review Directorate of the QAAHE and a member of the Working
Group producing the new Code of Practice on Collaborative Provision.
She has extensive experience of ECTS - as a co-ordinator, project manager,
promoter and is currently one of the team of Counsellors involved in the
EC's Quality Appraisal of the use of ECTS project which involves making
institutional visits. Assessment and grading issues are among the most
common matters raised at the counselling and review visits make by
Counsellors. She is also a local co-ordinator for a Tempus Project in
Slovakia and on the Professorial Board for a Tempus project in Poland.
Both of these projects have ECTS, curriculum re-structuring and quality
assurance as themes. Finally she is the UK representative on the
Unesco/Council of Europe Working Group on the recognition of Transnational
