Yes my experience as a single parent mature Masters student with a full-time job was grim because they said to us " We are setting it in half term as most of you part-timers are teachers" and they couldn't see we might have problems with that

My concern about these exams relates to equal opportunities - mature students with domestic caring responsibilities and students in part-time employment. The 2 day take away seems to assume that students will have a clear run to concentrate on the exam.

When I did my first degree they were trying out variations of these – 2-day take aways, 5-day take aways. I found them very difficult and much more stressful than traditional exams. I worked alone – I am not sure whether other people did, which is the sort of problem you get into, not only essay mills but all sort of legitimate and illegitimate assistance which needs to be managed.

I know I must sound like a dinosaur but we hand wrote all our work. I guess we could have copied someone else's but really the effort to do all that would never have occurred to me. I recall my peers and I were so pleased that we didn't have a standard exam with all the pressures and stresses and enjoyed the process. I do remember clearly working with a couple of others - and that wasn't frowned upon at all. We shared some books - they were limited too - but didn't do each other's work.
The resulting piece was pretty decent as I recall
However I guess things have changed with the internet etc etc - but it leaves me feeling we are focusing on the wrong things somehow....

Yes, I remember these type of exams being quite popular at the time, which raises the questions: were we less concerned about cheating in those days; did students not cheat in those days; was it more difficult to cheat in those days??? Or is it more about the key pedagogical question remaining the same – what steps are we taking to engineer out forms of cheating in the design of any assignment or exam question?

For example, I’m guessing it would be quite difficult for a student to `order’ the answer to a 3 day take away, where they had to relate the work they had done on previous modules (and/or placements) to this final capstone piece of work – but maybe not?

Cheers

John

Back in the early 1980s when I was a student at Nottingham University we had a three day open text exam. It was one of the best assessments I ever had as it tested my knowledge and application of my learning in a way that was appropriate to the subject (English and American Lit) and authentic in terms of future work - all in a time when 'employability' was unheard of.
I'd strongly recommend it

Hi All,

I don't have any examples to share at the moment, but we have had 24 hour papers in place of exams previously at my institution. I believe that they more accurately assess the type of skills we wish to develop in our graduates better than sitting in a hall with pen and paper for 3 hours. My view would be that it would be quite difficult to get someone else to produce the assignment for you in that timeframe. We would submit to Turnitin as with our other coursework submissions. In addition, we are small and post-graduate so there is an element of knowing your students work and being able to spot whether something is in a style unusual to that student. One possibility could be to retain the possibility of a viva type exam for any students which had borderline marks or a suspicious submission perhaps?

Best wishes,

Tracey

Dear Sue
Have you considered the issue of contract cheating?
If so how do you authenticate it is the student's own work?
I guess we all use this exam method for students with special needs and it has been commonly used for resits.
So my question is aimed at everyone!

Subject: 'Take away' exams

Dear Colleagues
We have a subject area who are using 'take away' exams during the formal exam periods, where the students are given the question and a short period of time (2 days) to complete their answer and submit the work. I've been asked to find out if other institutions use similar exams to these and any pitfalls and benefits you've found.
I'd be happy to collate the responses and share them to the group.
Thanks
Sue
