Thank you very much for everyone's positive responses, they are really helpful and much appreciated. I am quite taken by the idea of revising the UKPSF to make it more inclusive, particularly in the context of students as partners.
I will do some follow up but in the meantime please keep in the loop re opportunities to influence policy in this area. It sounds to me like this could be an ideal sector workshop.....

At the University of Bedfordshire,  we have been recognising support staff since the beginning of our HEA accredited CPD framework.  Our portfolio approach seems to enable people to provide quite varying evidence.  Many have gained fellow, as they work directly with students, supporting them in academic skills etc.,

We have over the last six months been supporting our research graduate students to gain AFHEA through the taught induction programme that is part of our accredited framework - this has been fairly successful, although it does depend on students being able to access some level of teaching/supporting learning - some have done this within their departments, supporting seminars etc., or through our peer-assisted learning scheme.  There has been a great deal of interest from these students, and one of our issues is resourcing this, so far we have coped, and integrating students with academics seems to have worked fairly well in these sessions.

If anyone would like more information/chat, or to share their own approaches to this, more than happy to discuss.

Not sure about a D0 or DS, it seems that AFHEA is an appropriate minimum in my experience, and I'm not sure what you might remove to make a D0 - happy to hear others ideas on what this level  might ask for though.

Hi Alistair,

Lincoln is also considering how best to accredit current students' expertise in teaching and learning through a similar model. We were inspired by BCU's work and would absolutely want to be part of any discussions to revise the UKPSF.

In terms of Students' Union / Association staff for sure, and possibly sabbatical officers, I see no reason why they couldn't achieve Associate Fellowship - especially those delivering training for Student Reps, volunteers etc.

Birmingham City University have established a non-accredited DS award alongside D1-D4, particularly for their students engaged in their Student Academic Partnership scheme (https://bcu.ac.uk/cmsproxyimage?path=/_media/docs/creating-the-learning-community.pdf). Though some of their students could probably meet the D1 requirements.


I think we ought to push for the revision of the UKPSF to establish a D0 / DS level award to recognise the growth of students as partners schemes in many universities, but in the meantime BCU's approach is one way forward.  It is described in their recently accredited UKPSF Birmingham City University's Professional Standards Framework.

Dear colleagues,
We have recently had our CPD scheme accredited by the HEA and at the launch event this week I was asked if Student Association staff and possibly even Sabbaticals could apply. This is a good question?! We have been encouraging support staff to take part e.g. librarians, learning technologists, technicians etc but this possibility had not crossed my mind. I would be very interested to hear if there is a precedent for this in the sector already. I think that if it was possible, it would most likely be to gain recognition as AFHEA.
