Hello Sue
I'Ll be really interested in the outcomes of your investigation please -
this is an area we've been looking at and developing some support and
resources. We offer a one day workshop for programme leaders - directed
specifically at those who are new to the role, though we quite often have
more experienced PLs coming along (if theres space for them). These are
very well attended. We spend some time discussing expectations of
programme leaders, in relation to the range of stake-holders, and mapping
a timeline of programme leader responsibilities; but also we focus on the
individual programme leaders' visions for their programme, and how to work
with institutional processes and requirements to help achieve that vision.
We look at some of the quality processes, and preparation for programme
review/approval.
We have a newly approved handbook for programme leaders, and are planning
to set up a forum of some kind over the coming academic year.
Some of our programme leaders have very good support from their Heads of
Dept., but the roles and practices vary considerably from one
Faculty/Department to the next. There hasn't been much university-level
guidance or training to speak of, up to now; we're also starting to think
about something similar for course ('module') leaders.
Best wishes
Sally
