Dear Colleagues
Many thanks to everyone who responded to the recent SEDA Values Review Consultation. Your feedback and comments were invaluable in helping us produce our report, which was considered by the SEDA Executive Committee on 27 February. The report summarised key points from feedback received and provided an exemplar of a draft model for revised Values based on suggestions made by respondents to the Values consultation.
The SEDA Executive Committee agreed the following actions in terms of taking this work forward:
- a small working group of the Executive Committee will use the report and its recommendations to discuss and finalise wording of the Values for presentation to the June Executive meeting
- the SEDA Executive wil agree and ratify any revision of the Values and outcomes will be reported to the SEDA membership
- an article on the Values revision will be written for the next edition of Educational Developments (issue 15.2)
We will be requesting permission from everyone who responded to the Values Consultation to quotes extracts from their response for the Ed Dev article. All quotes will be anonymous and no institution or individual will be named.
We will keep you in touch with progress. Meanwhile, here is an 'At a glance' summary of the consultation responses:
- the Values are seen as important to the SEDA community
- there was little appetite for wholescale change
- a number of responses explored the notion of Values and the issues this raises (this will be explored in detail in the Ed Dev article
- the SEDA community needs to be able to use the Values to plan, act and review actions; there was strong support for the Values being presented as actions, or as a commitment to action
- the importance of Values reflecting the multiplicity of stakeholders was stressed
- importance of Values being applied to all aspects of SEDA's work and its overarching mission was stressed
- feedback highlighted that some of the Values are not expressed as Values; some overlap was noted
- a number of suggestions were made for clarifying and redefining some of the Values and for addressing omissions (examples being students as partners, innovation and creativity)
- strong support expressed for emphasising a commitment to educational development internationally
- the Values need to be expressed as simple statements ('this we value') that can be remembered and articulated
- it is important that any revision of Values considers the practicalities for those engaged in SEDA accredited programmes and Fellowships
Please do get in touch with any further comments and queries
Best wishes
