A wide range of video and audio resources are now available for HE
practitioners, including staff developers, to download via the website
of the South West Spoke of the HEFCE-funded National HE STEM Programme
that concluded on 31.7.12.

In order to facilitate the use of these materials, a variety of detailed
activity ideas and related support materials are also available for HE
staff to adapt for their own particular settings.


1. Creative STEM website: Video and audio resources developed by 6
different South West projects.

Of particular relevance to HE staff developers are activity ideas for:

- encouraging HE staff in the development of strategies to improve the
employability skills of learners on STEM degree programmes

- setting up a peer assisted learning scheme and developing a range of
strategies to improve the induction process

- stimulating discussion about the challenges and rewards of engaging
employers, particularly in relation to workforce development.

2. Becoming a STEM Enthusiast

With a focus upon Maths, Engineering and Physical Sciences disciplines,
this project produced a series of video vignettes in which both students
and staff talked about the rewards, challenges and day-to-day
experiences of learning and teaching within their discipline.

In relation to HE staff development, the following activities are
available (from the link below) that relate to a selection of the video
vignettes:

- STEM Teaching Toolkit - an activity to develop strategies and tools to
encourage active learning

- Teaching STEM through Research - an activity to develop strategies and
tools to incorporate research interests into undergraduate teaching
programmes

3. Adult returner journeys through HE to STEM careers

- 24 films of adult returners talking about their experience of
progressing into and through higher education in science, technology,
engineering and maths. The resources also includes an inspiring montage
video narrated by Kate Bellingham, science journalist and TV presenter.
