Dear List Members
I would be most interested to chat with individuals about their
experiences in the design of marking schemes to guide research
supervisors in their marking of student research reports. The reports I
have in mind are clinically based and to varying extents, involve the
students' use of statistical procedures to report research findings. I
expect, however, that lessons could be shared across disciplines.
To help keep the discussion focused, I should point out that my main
interests are in the following areas:
a) the availability of existing tools for generating electronic marking
forms which can be accessed very conveniently by markers
b) addressing the challenges of generating flexible objective marking
schemes in contexts where projects vary in terms of skills required of
students and opportunities to exercise these skills
and
c) ensuring that the amount of input required from the supervisor is
taken into consideration in arriving at the final mark.
The need to address the challenge under b) arises from the potential
limitations of simply presenting markers with a list of criteria and
inviting them to use these in the absence of an inbuilt algorithm for
deriving the mark. In this context, it is difficult to monitor how
consistently the criteria are actually being used across markers.
I look forward to some stimulating discussions.
Best wishes
Margaret
