As you may know, Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) have been the skills body (until April 1st 2011) with a primary responsibility for developing the qualifications framework for teachers in the lifelong learning sector (mainly FE). They have recently undertaken a review of the qualifications existing since 2007. Part of their proposals are to create more options for those undertaking the Diplomas in Teaching (which lead to QTLS), and a national (for England at least) CPD framework:

The review is about to end, and I have been asked to provide some guidance information aimed at those working at the interface between HE and FE – for example, those teaching on both HE and FE programmes, or HE in FE programmes.
I have a few questions, the answers to which should help enormously in providing useful guidance for these groups, and I hope you might have a few minutes to respond some time in the next few days:
1 Does your institution offer separate qualifications for those qualifying to work in FE as opposed to HE, and/or do you have any dual qualifications – which are mapped against the UK PSF and the LLUK standards?
2 What was the rationale for the decisions that were made in answer to question 1; and to what extent do you think the two standards frameworks are compatible?
3 Do you currently run any courses/modules/workshops aimed at preparing people to work at the HE/FE interface (for example, modules which might help prepare FE teachers to undertake HE work, or vice versa)? And would you be happy to share them as examples of the kinds of CPD that others in need of similar preparation might consider?
4 If you have taken part in either or both of the current reviews (LLUK and/or HEA) do you have any strong views which might relate to any of the above?
Thanks for your time. I won’t be referring to anyone’s names in the guidance, but it would be helpful to know institution names (so as not to double count any institutions), and particularly if you are happy for some of your awards/CPD to be named as examples of relevant ITE/CPD for HE/FE.
If you would prefer to post a reply to me personally, rather than as part of this general forum, please feel free to do so. And please forward on this information if you think there are others out there who might have something to say.
Thanks
John Lea
