Given the many demands placed on academics, it is often difficult for them
to get involved in and stay engaged in professional development projects.
I have been running a professional development project for health care
academic tutors. The project is voluntary and involves attendance at several
workshops and production of teaching materials. This is not an accredited
course and particpants do not receive any fee or award for taking part.
There has been a lot of interest in the project and academics have attended
workshops but retaining their involevemnt for a whole aademic year has been
difficult and, now that they need to produce materials (perhaps at a rather
busy time of year for them) the drop out rate has increased.
I would like to hear from any one else who has tried to work with academics
in this way, to hear any successful strategies you may have tried, and
advice on any research studies on this topic.
