3-4 April 2008
Enhancing Curricula: using research and enquiry to inform student
learning in the disciplines
Venue: Lycée Francais, New York
http://www.cltad.ac.uk
The 2008 Enhancing Curricula Conference will focus on the enhancement
and redefinition of traditional disciplines in art and design as a
result of the outcomes of research and enquiry – looking at issues
that are particular to “us”. The 4th cltad international conference
will explore factors and contexts which are bringing and are likely
to bring about significant change in art and design education. We
invite research papers, conceptual papers, and work in progress/
showcases to show how research and other forms of enquiry can inform
teaching and student learning in art design and media. This year we
are introducing a new category of submission: symposia.
The conference is intended to encourage discussion, question
practices, stimulate debate and consider challenges for the future.
We are particularly keen to hear from
· teachers who have made, or are making, changes to their
curricula as a result of the outcomes of research and other forms of
enquiry
· disciplinary groups who have influenced new approaches to
curriculum content
· colleagues from different disciplines who have collaborated to
develop emergent disciplines
· theorists who have views about the future of art and design
education
· those who might wish to challenge current orthodoxies in
learning and teaching
· employers who have influenced, or would like to influence
curricula
· those who are keen to extend their professional commitment to
student learning
· those with strong views on the nature and future of the
disciplines in art and design
The conference will address the disciplinary contexts of:
Architecture and Interior Design
Craft-based disciplines
Cultural Theory
Fashion and Textile Design
Fine Art
Furniture and Product Design
Graphic Design
Illustration
Interdisciplinary and Multi-disciplinary approaches
Interior Architecture
New media
Performance
Photography
Abstracts are invited that address one or more of the above
discipline areas
Contributions
Research papers: (45 minutes, including 15 mins discussion)
These papers should adopt accepted research principles, using
recognised methodologies within an evaluative context. The
application of existing research outcomes to new scenarios is
perfectly acceptable as long as they demonstrate an awareness of the
relevant research literature and have an evaluation of the impact of
the research or any developmental change. Descriptive or explanatory
accounts of curriculum design etc. are insufficient in this context
to count as research. (Full paper length 5000 words)
Conceptual papers: (45 minutes, including 25 mins discussion)
These will be more polemical with a focus on challenging accepted
orthodoxies within the disciplines through various forms of analysis
and interpretation. Contextualisation through reference to current
debates in learning and teaching will be expected. (Full paper length
3000 words)
Symposia: (90 minutes, including 15 mins summary discussion)
Symposia involve three related papers presented together in an
extended session lasting 90 minutes (20 minutes per paper) with a
panel consisting of a Chair and the authors of the three papers.
(Full length of each paper 3000 words)
Work in progress/Showcases (30 minutes)
These sessions allow colleagues, to discuss their existing or
emerging projects, where they have developed effective practices,
with a ‘work in progress’ or showcase session, to share and receive
constructive criticsm and support from the conference.
Submission
Colleagues wishing to present at this conference should submit either
an abstract of no more than 500 words or a full paper. Full paper
submissions will be double-blind refereed prior to the conference,
for international standard recognition. All submissions should
address one or more of the discipline areas. They should be written
in English, and structured with the following sections: title, author
(s), institution(s), discipline(s), objectives, and, where
appropriate, research methods, results, and conclusions.
(Please note that when published the proceedings of the conference
will include refereed research, conceptual papers and symposia. Work
in progress/showcases will only be published on cd.)
