Apologies for cross-postings
Dear all
I am the Programme Leader/Manager for the PgCert. Learning and Teaching in
HE at Plymouth. I have been running this course for staff new to teaching
HE at Plymouth and its partner colleges for over six years. During that
time although I have met with many people across the country doing similar
roles to me at various ILTHE, SEDA and now HEA events, I have been
thinking for some time that it would be really beneficial if we had our
own mailing list where we could discuss and debate issues relating to our
particular practice at any time. I know many of you meet as regional
groups and engage in similar activities and I did try to start something
like that in the SouthWest without much success.
I think it can be a difficult and challenging job at times and being able
to share concerns and good practice through an accessible medium such as a
mailing list would be useful and helpful and would complement those of you
who meet up face-to-face. I am very interested to hear whether you, as a
leader of courses or programmes for professional development agree and
would like to join such a list. To get this off the ground I’m sending
this email to a number of mailing lists where I think people like me are
members.
There are a number of issues we could begin to discuss such as:
Who is involved in teaching and running these types of courses? What type
of contracts are they on?
What impact will the national professional standards have in relation to
your programme and institution?
Do you incorporate the discipline specific pedagogy into your course and
programmes? If so how?
But I think a good place to start is perhaps sharing general information
about our courses and programmes to find out how similar/different they
are. Below is a list of questions which I have created—please feel free to
add any more which you think are relevant.
I have already prepared some answers to these questions for Plymouth and
would be happy to share this with anyone who responds to this message.
General course/programme information:
1. Where is it located (eg Central unit or faculty or other)?
2. What is the level, number of credits and , where relevant, award
of the programme?
3. What is the structure of the course/programme?
4. What types of staff attend?
5. Is it mandatory for staff on probation?
6. How long can they take to complete the course/programme?
7. How many have you registered on the course/programme this year?
8. How is it delivered (eg workshops, blended learning, online etc)?
9. What is the format for delivery (eg intensive bursts, or regularly
through out the year, or a mixture of both)
10. Who is involved in teaching on your course?
11. How is it assessed?
12. Is your course accredited? If so which professional body is it?
The questions could go on and we could look at each in more detail, but I
think this will do for a start. I look forward from hearing from you and
your thoughts about setting up our own mailing list. Any ideas as to what
it might be called?
Regards
Rachael
