Improving Student Learning Through Teaching
The 14th Improving Student Learning (ISL) conference will be held on
4-6 September 2006 at the University of Bath, UK.
The major aim of the Improving Student Learning symposia is to provide
a forum which brings together those who are primarily researchers into
learning in higher education and those who are primarily practitioners
concerned more pragmatically with improving their practice, but from
whichever starting point, papers are only accepted if they take a
sufficiently scholarly, research-based approach.

Theme
It is interesting that it has taken us 14 years before choosing this
year's theme – Improving Student Learning Through Teaching. At first
sight, not a particularly radical idea, but we must not forget that
"teaching without learning is just talking" (Angelo and Cross, 1993,
p3). Papers have been accepted under these specific headings:
1 Teaching methods
2 Course and programme design
3 Skills development and lifelong learning
4 e-Learning
5 Supporting learners
6 Diversity and inclusivity
7 Implementing and managing change and innovation
8 Institutional strategies
9 Departmental strategies
10 Faculty development methods and/or strategies
Location
Bath is a beautiful city which stands on the River Avon among the
hills of England’s West Country. The city’s compactness and striking
architecture – Roman baths and sweeping Georgian terraces – combine to
produce one of the most elegant sights in Europe.
History of the ISL conference
In 1993, the first Improving Student Learning Symposium was held at
Warwick University in the UK. Since then it has become an established
event on the international calendar, with up to 200 participants from
over 15 countries at each conference.
