LTSN PHYSICAL SCIENCES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
'New Courses - New Students'
Wednesday 3rd December 2003
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Weston Building, UMIST, Manchester
WORKSHOP AIMS
As recruitment to single subject sciences becomes ever more
challenging, there has been an evolution in the type of science
provision offered in many institutions. The widening participation
agenda is likely to increase the pressure on recruitment even further
and science provision may have to evolve even more quickly. These
'extra' students in HE are not likely to be looking for 'traditional'
courses but may be attracted by vocational, applied and what they see
as more relevant and exciting disciplines.
There is evidence to suggest that 'new' disciplines (e.g. sports
science, forensics etc,) are growing in popularity and the challenge
for physical sciences is to develop new courses which attract students
whilst providing a sound training in scientific principles.
The purpose of this meeting is to explore how the physical sciences
related disciplines might tackle the widening participation and
recruitment agenda through the evolution of new science-based
programmes. There will be an opportunity to explore new ideas for
science curricula and hear from colleagues who have evolved new
programmes which are successfully recruiting students.
PROGRAMME TO BE CONFIRMED
