Dear Colleagues,
Thanks very much to those of you who sent me information about research into the effectiveness of small scale learning and teaching projects. In general it seems that these projects are seen as a 'good thing' but there is very little published literature (mainly internal evaluation reports). I am interested in the rationale behind these projects particularly with respect to 'hidden' outcomes, e.g. CPD for the staff involved, the 'message' it conveys about the funding organisation / department (e.g. how it values learning & teaching / lecturers), a sense of ownership in the organisation etc.. I suspect (with no evidence whatsoever!) that these 'hidden' outcomes are sometimes of greater value than the actual 'products' developed. However, it would probably take some extensive research to 'measure' this and to ascertain whether, at the end of the day, the projects are worth the amount of challenging administration they sometimes require.
Small scale projects is one of the areas to be investigated through the LTSN evaluation team, so it'll be interesting to see what arises from that study.
Thanks again,
Helen
