Space for thought: the quality of learning in art and design ?
leader: Professor Barry Jackson
19th March 2002, Davies Street, London,
booking http://www.cltad.ac.uk
Background/Issues
This workshop offers the opportunity to work on issues which concern
you about maintaining or improving student learning in art and
design. The agenda for the day will be set by the participants, in an
open space approach with guidance from the workshop leader. The
outcomes will include a shared report produced largely on the day.
The process is based on the assumption that workshops work best when
they address issues which are of real concern to the participants.
Therefore participants will need to be actively engaged in generating
and addressing those issues which concern them, within the overall
theme of student learning in art and design. There will be no
advanced agenda other than that. A certain amount of orchestration is
provided to make the process productive.
Participants i.e. who should be there and why
Anyone teaching in art and design who wishes to have the space to
think about and discuss issues of student learning in art and design.
Aims
The workshop aims to:
* offer the opportunity to reflect on and discuss issues which
participants bring
* provide space and structure to nominate and agree issues to be
addressed, and to discuss them with others with similar interests
* produce a shared report of the discussion and ideas which emerge
Outcomes
At the end of the workshop it is hoped that participants will:
* have a compiled report reflecting the day's deliberations
* form a network of people with whom they can continue to interact
* have collected references to a number of resources which may help
their further thinking
* enjoy a sense of having explored some area of concern to them in more depth
Process
The process is loosely based on Open Tpace Technology, (full
references and acknowledgements will be provided at the session, a
process which allows the participants' concerns to be the agenda for
discussion. It stems from a recognition that much of the valuable
experience of conferences is the discussion which arises informally
between participants. We will provide a process which provides 'just
enough' structure to permit focussed work to take place. Broadly the
process will include the following stages:
1. Introduction to the process and rules of the day
2. Identification and ownership of individual agendas
3. formation of discussion groups
4. work on the topics
5. production of the reports
6. plenary and feedback
About the workshop leader
Barry Jackson is Director of Learning Development at Middlesex
