Dear Colleague
In July 1999 we held the first national symposium on Failing Students in Higher
Education. This event brought together policy makers, academics, student
support and counselling colleagues to look at different ways of understanding
and responding to student failure. The title of the event was deliberately
ambiguous to provoke thought about how failure is experienced and caused.
A second symposium will be held in Lancaster on Friday 5th July 2002. This
second event will take further the discussions about individual student
approaches but will also address how institutions can respond to potential,
actual or perceived student failure.
Contributors will include:
Margo Blythman, Teaching and Learning Coordinator at the London College of
Printing at the London Institute,
Roderick Floud, Provost of London Guildhall University and President of
Universities UK.
Karen Hinett, Education Development Officer at the UK Centre for Legal
Education.
Susan Orr, Teaching and Learning Coordinator at the London College of Fashion
at the London Institute.
Moira Peelo, Coordinator of the Student Learning Development Centre in the
Higher Education Development Centre and Research Associate in the Department of
Applied Social Science at Lancaster University.
Colin Rogers, Head of Department and Senior Lecturer in the Department of
Educational Research at Lancaster University.
Mantz Yorke, Professor of Higher Education at Liverpool John Moores University.
