Job description:  Curriculum developments co-ordinator
full-time, fixed-term post for 9 months at ALC 2

General description

The University's Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy has as one of its 9
aims to:
                 "Ensure that all students on completion of their programme of
study have acquired a range of abilities to allow them to continue to grow
intellectually, be well-equipped for work and able to contribute effectively to
society."

The University has had a number of short-term projects and initiatives
investigating and piloting student profiles, the embedding of key skills,
developing curricula to enhance employability and self-efficacy of students and
so on.  The projects have been undertaken in conjunction with colleagues in
academic departments by the Careers Service and by members of the department of
Educational Research as externally-funded research projects.  The projects have
provided invaluable information and models but have been necessarily limited in
their scope.  The Department of Continuing Education has developed a
Certificate in Learning Skills in HE which has the potential to be incorporated
into developments.

The appointment of a Curriculum Developments Co-ordinator is intended to bring
together the outcomes of these various projects and initiatives and move the
work of the institution forward in the areas of:

*       Student profiling
*       Employability and career management
*       Embedding of key skills into the curriculum

The post will involve gathering information about the processes and outcomes of
work to date and initiating university-wide developments in conjunction with
the Student Registry, Careers Service and the Higher Education Development
Centre.  The post will be based in HEDC, reporting to the Director, Terry
Wareham.

Duties

1.      Collect and collate information on projects and initiatives relating to
employability, personal development profiling, embedding of key skills and any
other related areas of work currently in progress within the University.

2.      Work with colleagues in HEDC, the Careers Service, the Student Registry
and academic departments to develop an institutional model for the development
and recording of employability and transferable skills.

3.      Work with departments and central units to implement the model,
providing training and support as required.
Person specification


This post will require considerable breadth of knowledge about the issues
related to the areas of employability, transferable skills and personal
development profiling, including knowledge of the literature in this area and
developments within the UK HE system.  In addition, the post-holder will need
to have the skills to work successfully within the institution bringing about
considerable organisational change.  The emphasis in the post will be less on
research than on implementation and thus the persona pointed will need to have
this kind of orientation, coupled with a sufficient understanding of the
complex ways in which the University works and develops.

Essential characteristics and experience

An understanding of the issues of:

*       key and transferable skills
*       employability
*       personal development profiling

A familiarity with QAA and institutional developments in these areas

A good knowledge of Lancaster University's structures and cultures to enable
the person to work constructively in managing the change required for
implementing personal profiling and other curriculum changes.

A successful record of effective:

*       Interpersonal and networking skills
*       Persistence
*       Negotiating skills
*       Time and self-management
*       Project and/or change management
