Subject: Teaching distance learning courses
If you're in a 'conventional' university (i.e. where the tradition has been
face-to-face teaching) and are now getting involved in distance learning,
how are you managing or calibrating academic workloads in relation to
teaching distance learning courses? This is a question I've been asked in
my university and I'd welcome any thoughts, suggestions or descriptions of
how you do things. We have an annual figure for teaching hours per
lecturer, although this is interpreted flexibly. In the UK at least, many
universities have a similar approach - but there's a wide divergence of
views about how you translate teaching hours (which are often taken to mean
face-to-face contact hours) into the context of distance learning.
Any suggestions gratefully received!
