"Investigating the impact of professional development courses in teaching and learning in higher education"

Three years ago the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) collaborated to form a joint Educational Development Research
Network together with the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE). Our next meeting is planned for Thursday 15 November 2001 and
will be hosted by the Department of Education and Professional Development (EPD) University College London.
This network meeting will consider how we can investigate the impact of professional development courses in teaching and learning in higher
education. Holly Smith (Lecturer in Academic Staff Development, EPD) will initiate the discussion with reference to two examples of small
scale qualitative projects designed to address this question from different perspectives. The first is a LJMU Teaching Fellowship project,
the second a HESDA funded evaluation of professional development at LJMU, Lancaster, Sussex, Exeter and UCL Associate Teacher courses
running this year.
The aim of the meeting is to facilitate discussion of various research methods and approaches which could be utilised to explore this area,
and the implications that choices of methods have for the understandings that we seek and claims that we can make. Participants will have
the opportunity to explore these methodological issues in small groups during the network meeting. Practical outcomes of participation
might include the planning of an action research project by programme leaders or collaborations between institutions in researching the
professional development of teachers in higher education.
The cost of the meeting is £10, which will include afternoon drinks.
