CONNECTIONS - training workshops at Sutton Courtenay, near Oxford

AUTUMN 2000

Becoming the author	of your life
with Alan Dale
1 October

Authority is often seen as "heavy", imposed externally, and limiting. But,it's really a question of who's to be author - of your own thoughts, feelings, attitudes, emotions and behaviour. If you are, then authority is neither external nor imposed, but an aspect of freedom. Why then, do we so often let others control our lives, or try to control theirs, in those"heavy" ways?
Find out how and why you avoid being author of your own life; how you can take that authority and wear it lightly; how you can use it to meet your real needs and have a good time; and even how you can use it to help others do the same in a society which works for people. This is a structured workshop which takes you from your past and present into a future which will work better for you. Many people have found it to be the start of a process which continues to be fruitful for them for a long time afterwards.
Alan has been leading groups for over 30 years. He is the Director of Cortijo Romero, the personal development holiday centre in Spain. Previously, he taught organisational behaviour in several universities, worked as a consultant in all kinds of organisations and was head of education and training in a region of the NHS. Alan also founded Little Grove, a residential community and personal development centre in Chesham, Bucks. He is a former Chair of the Group Relations Training Association.

Creating human organisations
with David and Sue Selway
5 November

Life is difficult. Work life, given the pace of technological and organisational change can be doubly so. Many organisations fail to get the best from, or give the best to, their members because they do little or nothing to tackle these difficulties in a way which recognises the humanity of the people in the organisation.
However it is possible to create a culture within any organisation which encourages personal and organisational growth and learning. This does not make life any less difficult but it does make it more possible for the organisation and the people within it to cope with those difficulties.
Participants are encouraged to work in a experiential group towards creating a supportive learning community and through this facilitated group work are encouraged to develop their own skills and understanding in managing personal and group process.
During the day long workshop a brief introduction to the process will be given. The group will then work as an experiential group for the greater part of the day. At the end of the day time will be given to discuss the experiential group work and begin to process the learning from the days events.
David and Sue, along with colleagues in a NHS trust and at the University of the West of England have been working for the last 7 years on the development of an experiential process which enables Individuals and organisations to learn how to create and sustain supportive learning communities.

The spirit of Christmas teams
with Mike Rawlins and David Jaques
10 December

The commonly-held belief that Christmas and the New Year is a season of goodwill, a happy and homely occasion, is not always borne out in reality. As we all know, aside from all the love and generosity, there are often underlying tensions, outwardly denied though inwardly felt. In this workshop we shall explore how some of the principles of outdoor team training can improve our capacity to gain more from a range of experiences - even family gatherings. It can be viewed as a cocktail of challenging but festive experiences allowing participants to enhance their appreciation of the key qualities demonstrated by successful teams; to raise awareness of their own team skills and to learn a few techniques applicable to many group situations, especially forthcoming ones.
The workshop includes a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities (none of them strenuous) of varying degrees of complexity, followed by review and planning sessions. The complement and the tasks of the teams may differ from those at at home but what they expose is likely to be familiar.
Mike is the originator and leader of a successful Team Development Project in British Universities funded by BP Amoco. He works with a wide range of corporate clients in the areas of Leadership, Team Development and Coaching having led and managed teams while employed by BP Amoco for 14 years in a number of diverse roles. David, author of Learning in Groups, works as a freelance trainer and consultant in educational and organisational development. By his own admission he does not usually enjoy the festivities of Christmas.
