Hello to everyone, and thank you for the points raised.
This is the info I am interested in: and my background.
I am a member of the Society of Editors and Proofreaders, and a group of us from the West Midlands and Warwickshire SfEP are trying to ascertain general guidelines for other members to follow when approached by students to proofread their theses and dissertations. Therefore, we have a few questions for universities. The guidelines, once written, will be submitted to the SfEP website for (free) use by other members.
At the moment, most proofreaders do not add anything to the work, merely check the quality. The Society for Editors and Proofreaders' has values and ethics which most of us follow, and in doing so we correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, and check consistency, structure and format. However, due to collusion and plagiarism rules, we don't re-write or paraphrase any work for students.
As such, we are asking universities
- do you allow your students to have their work proofread before submission
- what you consider acceptable/unacceptable when working for your students and if you have any guidelines or official 'rules'.
- what expectations and ideas do you have about what the student should get.
I am more than happy to post the results of the meeting, and if any of you have any questions you would like asking, am happy to take the questions along.
Kind regards
Claire

I do have a question I need to ask and got directed here by one of your subscribers, but I thought I'd say hello first. So...
