At UCE we are using Moodle as our VLE which has the function of a forum.
I am setting up a pilot mentoring project this September and intend to
use the forum for informal chats between the mentors and a Q&A. This is
very easy to use.

academics willing to have a try ... my list of suggested purposes for
investigation are below - here's an extract from the proposal I sent

I want to investigate the possibility of establishing a mechanism to
host student blogs (via a notional intranet area) wherein students will
be encouraged to record (perhaps using anonymised aliases) and compare
their experiences of study at the UoP - progress made, eureka moments,
experience of particular tasks, assignments or material, the highs, the
lows, frustrations, joys, human and cultural factors etc.
UoP Bloggers would be asked their permission to use/reproduce selected
contents of their blogs, and I envisage a number of potentially valuable
outcomes, such as:
* Providing data for research into the student experience
* Investigating the role of reflective writing in learning
* Exploring possible e-learning implications of blogging and
related technologies
* Enhancing the university's quality mechanisms in terms of
obtaining feedback and evaluation
* Supporting the development of learning communities in
particular
discipline areas
Any thoughts, folks?

Could anyone help me with 2 requests?
1)Does anyone know of any good software/programmes which might cover
affective issues in learning such as motivation, stress, confidence,
staying the course, adapting to change/transition and generally help
orientate students towards their learning effectively? I'm sure that a
specific package covering all these things would be too much to hope
for, but a few of the areas might be embedded in other packages
dedicated to things like essay writing, time management or orientation
into HE. If any colleagues have their own packages/programmes which we
could purchase a site license for, all the better.
2)Do any of your HEIs publish summaries of lecture notes on the web?
Here, I'm not referring to the full notes that many of your academic
schools may make available, just an outline of what was covered in the
lecture. What do you think of this idea, anyway? Do you think it would
help certain groups such as international students? Or does it
discourage independent learning?
