Male student experience in higher education
Request for information about student services, interventions and projects that effectively engage men
Thank you to everyone who responded to our related request for information in March. We are now interested in finding out about services, interventions and projects which have effectively engaged men.
About the study
The Equality Challenge Unit has commissioned the University of Sussex in partnership with Edge Hill University to undertake research on male student experience in higher education (HE). This is prompted by concern about the emerging gender differences in HE retention and achievement rates, and because of the limited amount of information in the public domain relating to why men withdraw from their studies more often than women, and achieve less good degrees when they complete their courses.
Emerging findings
Our research in seven HEIs is confirming that men make less use of academic development and pastoral support services than women. We have learnt about the occasional intervention however that has attracted an equal number or more men than women.
How you can help
If you have run, or know about such a service, intervention or project we would like to hear from you. This can be any type of academic development initiative, pastoral support, or an extra-curricular activity which contributes to personal, academic or professional development or support. Ideally we would like to know what the intervention is and data about male student engagement. If you have any thoughts about why men have participated in such an activity rather than others, this would be useful too.
Further information
If you have any information about effective interventions we would be very pleased if you would send it to us to inform this study - [log in to unmask], ideally by the end of June 2011. Alternatively, if you would like to be kept informed about the findings and outputs of this study, please contact [log in to unmask]
Many thanks
