Hi Gordon
The OU's Digital and information literacy framework covers use of external networks for research and communication:
http://www.open.ac.uk/libraryservices/subsites/dilframework/level4.php
It might suggest some directions to go in.
Our Being digital site has some activities around use of social media like Twitter and blogs, both for finding and creating information. The level is generally pitched a little lower than postgrad, but might be useful for those who've never encountered these tools before.

The 'Making the most of Twitter' activity has links to a couple of resources on how people are using Twitter for research and scholarly communication: http://www.open.ac.uk/libraryservices/beingdigital/objects/73/index.htm (see screen 4)
All the best
Katharine

Hi Gordon-
A good place to start might be the Research Information Networks "Social Media: A Guide for Researchers". A couple of years old now, but still relevant and it features some nice case studies.

Looking for advice on - social media and/for postgraduate research
Have been asked to incorporate a session on social media into the 'Postgraduate Academic Writing and Skills Course' that I run for PG research students
My thoughts on that would be - in as wide a set of terms as possible - so, for research, for networking, for writing publishing, for creating and evolving communities of practice etc.
Would very much value picking folks brains:
What would you add to that list in terms of social media and PG study etc.?
Anything in way of useful resources?
Any other thoughts - experiences etc on this at all?
Thanks
