Hi Michelle,
I think the point about information and 'telling' is vital. They do
need to access information but the way that access is organised is a
key factor. The FIMS (maths and comp science) faculty here at Glasgow
used to organise induction and transition as a series of speakers
presenting information to the new arrivals.
They have since changed to our new approach which is a
'student-generated' approach using classroom technologies. That lets
THEM generate the content and the tutors and support staff respond in
what becomes a contingent manner. Its become the default approach to
induction in FIMS faculty now.
We've a newsletter on our website that discusses this conception of
learner support as a 'psychosocial' approach rather than an
information-giving approach to development if you're interested.
Either way, I do agree that simply telling people is not always ideal.
Best wishes,
Nick
