When the 'Effective Learning Service' was established at the Bradford
University School of Management in 2005, the title was chosen because
it was felt that it went some way to removing any stigma attached to
'study skills' and/or about seeking 'support' or 'advice'.
The service was promoted then, as now, on the grounds that all
students can become more effective in the way they learn, and
particularly by learning from each other.
At meetings involving the ELS and teaching colleagues, the fluid
process of engagement with students and teaching staff was described
then, as now too, as 'learning development', and with 'effective
learning' a goal for all students.
