And along the same lines as Sam has just commented about what Northampton are doing, this paper by some of my Australian AALL colleagues might be of interest in this discussion:

Morning all,
Students here usually have the opportunity to submit to Turnitin multiple times; we believe this should enable them to see it as a tool to improve their work rather than just as a 'plagiarism checker'. To this end we recently produced a quick guide to help students interpret their reports and identify potential issues. It's freely available via our Skills Hub at https://skillshub.northampton.ac.uk/files/2018/12/Using-Turnitin-to-support-good-academic-practice-2eug6vd.pdf .
It’s just a starting point to overcome some of the anxiety we see when working with students, and is based on what we observe in the reports we see. Any ideas about how to improve it very welcome.
Best wishes
Sam

Hi Richard, All,
Definitely an area fraught with controversy... and one that Liam Greenslade tackled for us in our #Take5 blog:
https://lmutake5.wordpress.com/2017/03/28/take5-the-best-way-to-tackle-plagiarism/
So - I thought that in the interest of re-purposing, I'd email it out again!
All the best,
Sandra

There has been discussion here recently about the possibility of allowing students access to Turnitin prior to final submission of their assignments. The argument is that this would allow them to check that they have not plagiarised and help them to understand more fully what constitutes plagiarism.
I am not in favour of this as I feel it will lead to students spending precious time in reducing their similarity score rather than in fine tuning their writing.
I would be grateful on your thoughts and it would be interesting to find out what happens at other HEIs.
Thanks in advance and best wishes
Richard
