Dear Christina
My experience was, for a long while, very similar. I joined a union. It helped.

Subject: Re: LD tutorial time query
Dear Rosalind
I totally agree that this is a question worth asking. I would like to give my response in terms of my range of experience as:
* an EAP one to one tutor eg going through International Students draft theses
* a writing Centre drop-in tutor
* a dyslexia support tutor
1. The typical duration of LD 1-to-1 tutorials. Do you feel this is appropriate?
Usually one hour. But the appropriacy varies according to context. E.g. a drop-in enquiry in a Writing Centre could well be satisfactorily resolved in 15 mins. But the student has to know already how to use you, what Questions to ask etc. As always it is the already advantaged who are able to take the most advantage.
Outside of drop-in the optimum length varies according to the purpose. E.g. something very Task Based sessions such as enabling a student to proof-read a certain length of text I would say 45 mins. But I have found that dyslexia sessions are more 'learning counselling' rather just Task completion. I find up to 50 mins is good because of learners' (and tutors') attention spans). But the time has to be sensed - people are ends not means.
2. The number of 1-to-1 appointments each LD typically offers to students per working week.
I can only answer this from the perspective of a sessional tutor and how many 1-to-1 appointments I am comfortably prepared to offer in a working day. I would say four with approximately three quarters of an hour lunch break. Each session up to one hour + at least half an hour record keeping afterwards + follow up materials +preparation. This adds up to eight hours which is a very conservative estimate. There is likely to be 2-3 hours gift work as well. Administrators (often with a very limited empathy for learning) tend to be very mean in their time i.e. for sessionals money calculation because they think one-to-one sessions have no preparation, and no feedback. Complete nonsense in both cases. The only thing arguably we don't do is marking.
3. An approximate ratio of time devoted to 1-to-1 appointments in relation to other LD tasks per working week: 1-to-1s v all other tasks (embedded teaching, working with programme colleagues, project work, meetings etc.)
As a sessional I can't really answer this.
CONCLUSION
My experience as an LD one to one tutor has been brilliant as regards students, generally OK as regards colleagues and somewhat poor as regards management.
There is only one viable response to this JOIN the UNION

Dear LD colleagues,
At my institution we are reviewing the time allocated to 1-to-1 appointments. We used to offer students bookings of up to 1 hour but have reduced these to 30 minutes during a trial period.
Anecdotal evidence appears to indicate that a 30 minute slot is too short for many students, especially those seeking advice on research projects.
Could I ask colleagues to let me know the following information about LD appointments at their institutions:
1. The typical duration of LD 1-to-1 tutorials. Do you feel this is appropriate?
2. The number of 1-to-1 appointments each LD typically offers to students per working week.
3. An approximate ratio of time devoted to 1-to-1 appointments in relation to other LD tasks per working week: 1-to-1s v all other tasks (embedded teaching, working with programme colleagues, project work, meetings etc.).
If you are short of time, a short response to just question 1 would be very much appreciated.
Best wishes,
Rosalind
