I think this thread, and the original email that prompted my warning, is a useful illustration of the importance of clarity in communication to the list.
I would suggest the following:
If you post with a request to subscribers to respond to you, please introduce yourself fully.
Give the name and address of the institution or organisation for which you work.
Explain the nature of your project with some background / contextual information.
Providing such information will avoid unnecessary suspicion and is also likely to increase the number of subscribers who will respond to you.
