I'm just catching up on emails after leave and found this thread very interesting... I too would be keen to join this community. Whilst my PhD is in psychology, I have published in learning development and am interested in research methods (qualitative especially). I have not yet been an external for a PhD viva but would be happy to join discussions / put myself forward as a potential examiner.

Best wishes,

Jane.

I've been / I am an external on U/G programmes, and have also been external for PhD vivas in the biosciences. Happy to contribute to this community in similar capacity PL

Dear Janette and all

I do have experience of being an external on undergrad progs - and found the material attached very useful (some a bit outdated now maybe) ... but I don't think much is out there specifically on 'being an external for a doctoral prog' ... Gina Wisker's book on supervision (https://he.palgrave.com/page/detail/?sf1=barcode&st1=9780230246218) has some relevant content - but maybe there is also scope for us to create such a guide through the proposed SIG?

Thanks John
I'm woefully ignorant on what experience one needs to have in order to examine a doctorate, if I'm not the only one then maybe the invitation could include some guidance on this?

Dear Martin

Many thanks for raising this. I think that as an increasing number of learning developers undertake doctoral study this issue will become ever more relevant.

I'd suggest that this might work well as a special interest group within the consortium. Perhaps the first thing to do would be to issue an invitation to those who already have doctoral qualifications and wish to put themselves forward as potential externals.

Would you be willing to act as the first point of contact for those interested? (My own studies are continuing - but I'll definitely put myself forward once I am doctored!)

All the best

John

Kia ora colleagues, I was wondering if anyone knows of a list of people who could act as external examiners for PhDs in learning development. Would it be worth our consortium putting together a list? Perhaps it would be too bothersome to keep it updated or people might feel they could just contact people whose publications they've read. Anyway, I'd be happy to collate any suggestions ... partly for my own selfish purposes!
