Dear All
After long silence, I am advertising AWE again - WITH AN IMPORTANT BIT OF NEWS.
As part of a reduction in its own hosting, Hull University has asked me to move AWE to another website. It can now be found at
hull-awe.org.uk
There are currently some technical problems, mostly involving the representation of non-standard characters such as those used by the IPA; but these, we trust, will be solved this week. Most of the site is very similar to the previous one, although - the technically minded among you may be interested - the wiki software is now a much upgraded version.
For those of you who don't know it, AWE (acronym for Academic Writing in [British] English) is a reference guide to usage in academic writing. It is a good (and growing) resource to recommend to students to look up their problems in writing. It is aimed at (and helps) both 'native-speakers' and 'non-native speakers'. When it is fully operational (and in term-time) it responds to some 8,000 hits a day, so its popularity and usefulness seem real. It currently has 13,675 pages, in the broadest sense, of which 3,781 are described as 'Content pages' - in other words, mostly single items of advice.
If you don't yet know it, try it!
And if you do know, use and recommend it, please note the new address - hull-awe.org.uk (We are always looking for new colleagues/contributors as well.)
