Indeed, one could even argue the other way: research that is too recent has not been available long enough for others to have had sufficient opportunity to refute or disprove it, whereas older work may well have stood the test of time.

I personally think this is rather poor practice. Some of the best sources I have used in my essays and, indeed, in my PhD went back to the 1950s and 1960s (e.g., Lewin and Alfred Schutz). There are certain features of human behaviour that do not change. That being said, I appreciate that, in certain disciplines, students have to know about the latest developments but they should be told that this is not always necessary.
